Dr Mark Salter MBBS MSc PhD MFPH MFPHM(Ire) DLSHTM is Consultant for Global Health and Senior Medical Advisor at Public Health England, United Kingdom. In this role he coordinates the international efforts of PHE in establishing bilateral links with nation states and regional networks as well as responding to requests for public health assistance in developing capabilities and capacities for response to public health emergencies and humanitarian crises.
Prior to studying medicine and completing his communicable disease training Mark worked in virology and microbiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he gained a PhD in Arenavirology. He has over 40 years’ experience in global health security dealing with disease control and incident management both locally and further afield, having worked during outbreaks internationally including in Central America (dengue haemorrhagic fever, measles, and cholera), Africa (Lassa, SARS, post-conflict, Ebola) and Asia (SARS, H5N1, and flooding response).
Mark has worked with the World Health Organisation for over 15 years, leading the WHO clinical response to SARS and working on issues relating to dangerous pathogens, disaster preparation, response and risk communication. He supports the Joint External Evaluation programme and has led JEE’s in Japan and the Philippines. In addition, he is a Deputy Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Mass Gathering and Global Health Security.
More recently Mark has been working on global health security related issues across the Eastern Mediterranean region most notably in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Pakistan as well as with the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET).
